Lantern Recovery Specialists plc teamed up Leicestershire based RME Consultancy Limited, a leading training provider to deliver the NVQ Level 3 Driving Goods Vehicles.

All of the Recovery Technicians at Lantern Recovery have now gained their qualification and are already feeling the benefits of the independent assessment.

Shining star?Lantern has allocated this Mercedes Vito van to the new RHA Rescue service

Lantern rides to RHA members? rescue

Commercial vehicle operators nationwide are benefiting from a new pay-as-you-go roadside rescue and recovery service which is being managed by Potters Bar-based Lantern Recovery Specialists plc.

RHA Rescue has been set up to cater for all vehicles owned by members of the Road Haulage Association, from trucks and vans to private cars, motorcycles and mobility scooters.

Members of the RHA?s Rescue and Recovery Group will be given first call on incidents in their area. So if a vehicle belonging to an RHA member breaks down, chances are it will be a fellow member who comes to the rescue.

Commenting on the lead role being played by Lantern, RHA Rescue and Recovery Group Chairman Richard Goddard says: ?I am delighted that one of our own members has been appointed to manage this vital RHA service.

?It proves beyond doubt that members can work together, regardless of their specialist sector within the UK transport industry.?

Lantern Recovery Specialists, which has a head office on High Street, Potters Bar, and an operating centre a stone?s throw from the South Mimms service area, has more than 40 years? experience as a car and commercial vehicle breakdown specialist. It also runs vehicle transportation, plant movement and rental businesses, while sister company Worldwide Recovery Systems is a specialist builder of recovery and tow trucks.

Lantern Recovery Specialists and Worldwide Recovery Systems are both long-term customers of Mercedes-Benz and Mitsubishi Fuso dealer S&B Commercials, which has headquarters in nearby Welham Green.

A recent addition to Lantern?s 250-strong fleet is a Mercedes Vito 111CDI Long van fitted with a folding ?dolly? trailer, which is stowed just inside the rear tailgate and can be winched in and out of the back of the vehicle. As well as bearing the Lantern name, this vehicle is also emblazoned with the RHA?s corporate logo.

Another new arrival is a 26-tonne Mercedes Axor 2529L, which has an eight-car transporter body built by Worldwide Recovery Systems. Other units based on Vito vans and Mitsubishi Fuso Canter trucks supplied by S&B are also currently being built by Wordlwide Recovery, for sale to third-party operators.

Commenting on the launch of RHA Rescue, Lantern?s Business Development Manager Mike Kenny says: ?The new service has made a flying start. In partnership with the 500 agents we manage nationwide, we?re providing RHA members with an added benefit that?s been very well received.?

He adds: ?As well as being a supplier, S&B Commercials are also our customer, since we provide the dealer with a vehicle recovery service. We enjoy an excellent relationship with S&B, often calling on their technical specialists for advice and assistance; nothing is ever too much trouble for them.?

RHA Rescue jump-starts new business service

The Road Haulage Association has announced that it will launch RHA Rescue, its new rescue and recovery service for members, on 18 September 2008.

RHA Rescue will be provided through Lantern Recovery Specialists plc and will cater for all vehicles that RHA members or their staff own or operate, from commercial vehicles to private cars, motorcycles and even mobility scooters. Members of the RHA?s own Rescue and Recovery Group will be given first call on incidents in their area.

The display of an RHA Rescue sticker in a vehicle windscreen will enable the Highways Agency and the Police to contact RHA Rescue as ?Owner?s Choice? in the event of an incident.

RHA chief executive, Roger King, said: ?We had a successful partnership with the RAC for a number of years. Following changes in the breakdown and recovery sector of the industry, the RHA Board of Directors has reviewed its requirements for its membership and Lantern Recovery Specialists plc has been chosen as our new partner in this area. Our new strategy for the delivery of these vital services will benefit our recovery operator members as well as our haulier members, making it truly a service for members by members.?

Lantern Terminate Green Flag Contract

Today become another memorable day in my working life within the recovery industry. After a great deal of deliberation and consideration with my co-directors, managers and staff a decision has been taken to terminate our services to Green Flag as of midnight, 9th May 2008.

The decision has been hard not least because I have worked as a contractor for them from the very beginning back in the 70s when it was National Breakdown. However, I can no longer sit back and watch the industry suffer at the hands of those who have no thought or care for the future of those who have worked so hard over the years to enhance their reputation and help them become what they are today. I don?t need to tell you about the spiralling charges we face on an almost weekly basis. The biggest single rise is the cost of the fuel and then maintenance and driver costs, not forgetting the increased holidays and additional training because of Health and Safety laws and for what return? If the media is anywhere near being right in their predictions, fuel could reach �1.60 a litre by July. A year ago I would have dismissed it, but at �1.20 a litre now, who knows? With no increase in the last three years and the costs continuing to increase, who is going to supplement the losses ?I know, no one. Loyalty is it is the one thing that we have relied on over the years, the ability to negotiate and speak to individuals that understand the industry and the effort that goes into attending a customer broken down at 3 o?clock in the morning.

Unfortunately, we are now dealing with banks and insurance companies where numbers are what matter except, in our accounts, they don?t stack up. At Lantern we believe in what we do, we work hard and we are diverse and hopefully our decision to walk away rather than roll over will at least prevent us from being busy fools.
